Survey: Moms monitor teen driving

CHICAGO, Aug. 17 (UPI) -- Two-thirds of moms say they don't use technology to snoop on their teens' driving, but 53 percent say they check out the teens' cars, a U.S. survey indicates.

The MotherProof.com survey, conducted online in November 2008, indicated 64 percent of moms said they would not put a camera or GPS tracking device in their child's vehicle, but 36 percent said they regularly check the miles on their teen's car to see how much they're driving.

The survey says 59 percent of moms ages 25-34 either would consider putting a camera or GPS system in their teen's car or have already done so, vs. 43 percent of moms ages 35-44 and 27 percent of moms ages 45-54.

However, 57 percent of moms ages 25-34 have followed their child in traffic to see where they're going and investigate their driving habits, vs. 29 percent of moms 35-44 and 18 percent of moms 45-54.

Seventy percent of moms 25-34 have investigated the contents of their teen's car, vs. 52 percent of moms 35-44 and 50 percent of moms 45-54.

The random sample of 1,032 women ages 25-54 with one child ages 15-19 has a margin of error of plus/minus 3 percentage points.
