WASHINGTON, Aug. 8 (UPI) -- Thirty-nine percent of U.S. parents polled say they've received no flu information from schools, despite the risk of a fall H1N1 outbreak, the Red Cross said.
"The spring H1N1 outbreak was a clear signal that everyone needs to prepare -- and that parents and schools should have plans in case the virus returns," American Red Cross spokeswoman Suzy DeFrancis said in a release Saturday.
Parents need to contact schools regarding plans for the H1N1 virus and teach their children the importance of hand-washing and covering their coughs and sneezes.
Children can help lessen the spread of the flu by vigorously rubbing their hands together for at least 20 seconds after soaping, paying extra attention to fingernails and using a disposable towel to turn off the faucet, the Red Cross said.
Putting hand-washing reminders at children's eye level may help them become regular hand washers.
