Women don't act in own breast interest

MORRISTOWN, N.J., July 22 (UPI) -- A large majority of women know there are simple steps they can take for better breast health, but not enough women are taking them, a U.S. survey indicates.

The survey, conducted by Yankelovich for One A Day, also says:

-- 95 percent know it's important to eat a healthy diet for breast health, but 53 percent report doing so regularly.

-- 93 percent know they should conduct regular breast self-exams, but 47 percent do regularly.

-- 88 percent know they should get a mammogram every year, but 68 percent of women 45 and older report doing so.

-- 84 percent know they should exercise, but 33 percent say they regularly exercise vigorously for at least 30 minutes.

-- 59 percent know they should take a multivitamin daily with vitamin D; 53 percent report taking a multivitamin daily.

Eighty percent of the women surveyed have been personally affected by breast cancer or know someone who has been.

One A Day is announcing a program on its www.oneaday.com Web site designed to not only to raise breast cancer awareness, but also to get women to do more to improve their own breast health.

The phone survey of 500 women age 18 and older took place late last month and has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.5 percentage points.
