Poll: Don't use cloned animals for food

LONDON, Oct. 10 (UPI) -- People in the European Union say meat from cloned animals should not go to market, a Eurobarometer poll indicates.

The survey of 25,000 people indicates that 58 percent of people say animal cloning for food production is unjustified, while 25 percent of respondents said they would accept cloned meat products in some circumstances, The Daily Telegraph reported Friday.

The poll was conducted in July as part of the European Commission's effort to decide whether it should approve animal cloning for food production.

"The commission will not proceed with the analysis of these elements before considering whether and what action may be necessary," European Union Health Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou said in a statement.

The Eurogroup for Animals said the European Commission should act on the survey and not approve cloning for meat production.

"Consumers want natural and healthy food, not Frankenstein food," said Eurogroup for Animals Director Sonja Tichelen.
