Whole Foods recalls ground beef

AUSTIN, Texas, Aug. 9 (UPI) -- Whole Foods Markets says it is recalling fresh ground beef it sold in the United States and Canada, fearing it may contain E. coli bacteria.

The Austin, Texas-based grocery chain says food safety officials have determined the beef in question apparently came from Coleman Natural Beef whose Nebraska Beef processing plant was previously subject to a nationwide recall for E. coli contamination.

The ground beef was sold between June 2 and Aug. 6.

The grocer says that although the illnesses are allegedly linked to Whole Foods Markets in Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, the recall is being extended to its stores in Connecticut, Rhode Island, Maine, Massachusetts, Florida, New Jersey, New York, Kentucky, Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Washington D.C., Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Canada.

The company is urging customers who may have purchased ground beef between the subject dates to dispose of the product and return to the store with the packaging or receipt for a full refund.
