Stand straight to prevent hunchback

ROCHESTER, Minn., Aug. 8 (UPI) -- A U.S. health newsletter says the rounding of the back resulting in the appearance of a hump -- kyphosis -- can be prevented.

Mayo Health Letter explains kyphosis is caused in older adults by thinning bones fracturing, usually in the vertebrae in the part of the spine supporting the shoulders, arm and trunk. These multiple compression fractures can reduce a person's height, but may also curve the spine and result in what looks like a hump.

Stooped posture due to compression fractures adds to pressure along the spine, which creates the potential for more compression fractures, the Mayo Clinic Health Letter says.

The newsletter advises straight posture to reduce excess pressure and recommends exercises that help strengthen the back muscles and improve posture. Generally, they recommend those with osteoporosis avoid exercises that round the back and do exercises instead that gently straighten the trunk and back.

Osteoporosis is a disease in which bones thin, become fragile and more likely to break. The National Osteoporosis Foundation recommendations for good bone health include: good nutrition, weight-bearing and muscle strengthening exercise, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption, consulting healthcare providers and getting tested.
