'Morning people' may get better grades

BALTIMORE, June 10 (UPI) -- Being inclined to be active in the morning rather than evening may predict better grades in college, U.S. researchers say.

College students who were evening types were found to have lower grade point averages than those students with "morningness."

"The finding that college students who are evening types have lower grade point average is a very important finding, sure to make its way into undergraduate psychology texts in the near future, along with the research showing that memory is improved by sleep," study co-author Daniel Taylor of the University of North Texas said in statement. "Further, these results suggest that it might be possible to improve academic performance by using chronotherapy to help students entrain their biological clock to become more morning types."

The study, co-authored by Kendry Clay of the University of North Texas, compared health surveys that included sleep habit questions with daytime functioning for 824 undergraduate students enrolled in psychology classes.

The findings were presented at the 22nd annual meeting of the Associated Professional Sleep Societies in Baltimore.
