BOULDER, Colo., June 5 (UPI) -- Many U.S. doctors and dietitians say choosing the right nutrient-dense foods can help people lose weight, look younger and decrease disease risk.

"The Well-Stocked Kitchen," in the magazine Natural Solutions' June issue, offers a list of 45 foods everyone should keep on hand, as well as recipes that incorporate those foods into easy-to-prepare meals and snacks.

"We read what to eat, what not to eat, and what to stock in our kitchens that will make us healthier and slimmer," Linda Sparrowe, editor in chief of Natural Solutions said in a statement. "But how many of us have taken that advice -- thrown out the food that's bad for us and replaced it with good food -- only to wonder what we're supposed to do with it?"

The magazine suggests several "must-haves" to on hand including:

-- Freezer: Stock up on salmon, black cod, ground bison, ground turkey, frozen organic berries and vegetable, flaxseed and whole-grain breads and waffles.

-- Refrigerator: Keep on hand pomegranate juice, organic salad greens, nut butters, avocados, omega-3 eggs, pre-cut vegetables, hummus, lemons, limes and salsa.

-- Pantry: Stock beans, short-grain instant brown rice, organic canned tomatoes, steel-cut oats, unsalted nuts and extra-virgin olive oil.
