Preparation can head off sports injuries

WAXAHACHIE, Texas, May 26 (UPI) -- Summer sports beckon, but couch potatoes need some preparation to avoid tendon and other injuries, a U.S. expert advises.

Dr. Marcus Roux, an orthopedic surgeon at Baylor Medical Center at Waxahachie, Texas, advises getting the muscle groups going prior to strenuous activity as well as lowering body weight.

"Don't just get off the couch and start playing tennis, golf or softball," Roux says in statement. "A year-round regimen will help prevent muscle tears and pulls, as well as tendinitis."

Roux recommends stretching, light weight-lifting and light cardio workouts beginning two to three months in advance.
