Members of the audiology and speech pathology department at The Methodist Hospital in Houston say lawn mowers, loud power tools, or even a fireworks display can top 130 decibels -- and are a reason to wear noise protection. Even parties -- loud music and large groups of people talking loudly -- can lead to hearing impairment. Research shows exposure to 105 decibels for an hour can put one at risk of hearing damage, the audiology experts say.
They advise seeking help for hearing if you:
-- Frequently ask people to repeat themselves.
-- Often turn your ear toward a sound to hear it better.
-- Keep the volume on your radio or TV at a level that others say is too loud.
-- Have ringing in ears -- known as tinnitus.
-- Have ear pain of any kind, have an ear infection -- such as swimmer's ear, or have a perforated eardrum.
