'Techno addicts' driven to see e-mail

NORTHAMPTON , England, Feb. 20 (UPI) -- If you wake several times a night to check e-mail on your personal digital assistant you may be addicted to technology, a British researcher says.

Nada Kakabadse of Northampton University in England says a growing number of people are becoming addicted to their cellphones, Blackberries and other digital devices.

In a study of 360 people, Kakabadse and colleagues suggest up to one-third were addicted to digital devices.

Kakabadse, who says people can get addicted to just about anything, says "techno addiction" can impact a person's job and personal relationships as the addict spends more and more time online than with family and friends.

"You would be surprised how many people had their PDA or Blackberry next to their beds," Kakabadse told the BBC. "Some people are very anxious when they don't have their technological gadgets next to them."
