MANHATTAN, Kan., Nov. 21 (UPI) -- It is true tryptophan in turkey helps people to sleep but a U.S. expert said the total caloric load of the Thanksgiving meal is what makes people sleepy.
Scott Beyer, an associate professor of animal sciences, industry and poultry at Kansas State University, said tryptophan can make people sleepy -- but it isn't solely responsible for post-Thanksgiving meal sleepiness.
"It's also a high-fat and high-carbohydrate meal -- any large meal can make a person sleepy -- especially if alcohol is included," Beyer told United Press International. "It's also the full effect of the meal -- after the Thanksgiving meal there's usually not a lot of exercise, no place else to go and people retire to the sofa -- and they're sleepy."
Typtophan in turkey can help a person sleep because the body will convert it into serotonin, which can have a relaxing effect making sleep easier, Beyer said.
