Planning can keep diabetics in check

GARLAND, Texas, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- A U.S. certified diabetes educator advises patients that with some planning the holidays need not threaten their diabetes regimen.

"Just because it's the holidays doesn't mean you shouldn't continue to take care of yourself -- but if you're smart about it, you can still have the things you want," Pam Davis of Baylor Medical Center in Garland, Texas, said in a statement. "Mall walking is a great way to plan your gift giving and burn calories at the same time!"

Davis suggests diabetics:

-- Prepare ahead for food choices by establishing a "carbohydrate budget." For instance, foregoing another carbohydrate at dinner allows for some dessert.

-- Practice portion control at the office potluck. Instead of saying "I can't have that" try just a sample spoonful of the items that look good.

-- Stick to the schedule despite shopping, parties, out-of-town guests and other disruptions. It is important to continue blood sugar monitoring and to find time for exercise.

-- Remember that despite careful eating, stress from holiday travel and dealing with family members can sometimes elevate blood sugar.

-- Contact the airline and get updated security regulations about carrying diabetes medications and supplies on the plane.
