Some women fear mammogram discomfort

PLANO, Texas, Sept. 21 (UPI) -- The fear of discomfort keeps some women from getting a mammogram, but a U.S. expert says there are ways to minimize any pain.

"Most women’s breasts are naturally more tender or slightly swollen during the week prior to their menstrual period," said Dr. Alicia Starr medical director of the Women’s Imaging Center at Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano, Texas, in a statement. "Try to avoid scheduling your annual mammogram during this time."

Some other things women can do for a more comfortable imaging procedure include:

-- Hold off on caffeine, which has a tendency to make a woman's breasts tender and lumpy. For the week prior to the mammogram cut the caffeinated coffee, tea and even soft drinks, diet drinks, chocolate and some over-the-counter pain relievers.

-- Steer clear of perfumes, talcum powder and oils that may leave a residue that can be picked up by the X-rays and obscure the image to the point a second mammogram is needed.

-- Wear a two-piece outfit with a blouse or sweater on the day of the appointment.
