Most NYC teens having sex use condoms

NEW YORK, Aug. 30 (UPI) -- More than two-thirds of sexually active New York teens use condoms, but fewer girls use the pill than nationwide, a Health Department report found.

The survey of New York high school students found 69 percent of sexually active teens use condoms, while 8 percent of sexually active teens or their partners use the pill, compared to 18 percent nationwide.

The report at: www.nyc.gov/html/doh/downloads/pdf/survey/survey-2007youthsex.pdf also found 19 percent of sexually active girls used no birth control the last time they had sex, compared to 14 percent nationwide.

Only 4 percent of sexually active teens use dual protection -- condoms and another method -- compared to 8 percent nationwide.

In 2005, the New York City teen pregnancy rate -- including live births, abortions and miscarriages -- was 94 per 1,000 girls aged 15 to 19, compared to the nation's rate of 76 per 1,000 in 2002, the most recent year on record.
