Sleep deprived excrete more urine, salt

AARHUS, Denmark, Aug. 10 (UPI) -- A lack of sleep leads to increased urinary output and more salt in urine, a team of Danish researchers found.

Researchers Birgitte Mahler, Kostantinos Kamperis, Soeren Hagstroem, Eva Radvanska, Soren Rittig and J.C. Djurhuus -- all at the Aarhus University Hospital, in Aarhus, Denmark -- studied 20 healthy volunteers.

The subjects -- 10 males and 10 females ages 19 to 35 years -- underwent two 24-hour circadian in-patient studies. Participants were sleep-deprived during one of the two sessions in a randomized sequence.

Blood pressure and heart rate were recorded every hour. Electrolytes, osmolarity, creatine and urea were evaluated in plasma and urine.

Quantity or contents of the daytime urine remained the same, but during the sleep deprivation period both genders in the sleep-deprived group produced markedly larger amounts of urine -- more pronounced in males than in females.

Mahler is scheduled to present the findings at the conference, Sex and Gender in Cardiovascular-Renal Physiology and Pathophysiology, at a meeting of the American Physiological Society in Austin, Texas.
