SUMMIT, N.J., June 15 (UPI) -- U.S. firm Celgene said Friday it has received marketing approval in Europe for Revlimid to treat multiple myeloma.
The drug was approved for use in combination with dexamethasone to treat patients with the disease who have received at least one prior therapy.
Revlimid -- the first Celgene drug approved in Europe -- is the first oral cancer treatment for multiple myeloma OK'd there in more than 40 years, the company said. The drug was previously approved in the United States for the same indication.
"We are working diligently with local regulatory authorities to determine next steps for pricing, reimbursement and distribution plans for all (European) member states so that Revlimid is available for eligible patients as quickly as possible," said Aart Brouwer, president of Celgene International.
Multiple myeloma is the second most commonly diagnosed blood cancer. About 85,000 Europeans are now undergoing treatment for the illness, with 25,000 deaths from the disease anticipated this year.
