NAPA, Calif., May 31 (UPI) -- U.S. firm Dey said Thursday its marketing partner Critical Therapeutics has been approved to sell Zyflo CR for asthma in patients 12 years and older.

The controlled-release tablets -- the first U.S.-approved leukotriene synthesis inhibitor -- have been approved for twice-daily prevention and chronic treatment of asthma, the company said.

Pursuant to a deal struck by the companies in March, Dey will co-market the drug with Critical Therapeutics.

Dey said the new treatment is not indicated for use in the reversal of bronchospasm in acute asthma attacks but can be continued during acute exacerbations of the condition.

Zyflo goes after leukotrienes, the inflammatory mediators responsible for asthma symptoms like inflammation, swelling and bronchoconstriction. The therapy uses SkyePharma's drug-delivery technology, which controls the amount and rate of drug released into the body, Dey said.
