ALISO VIEJO, Calif., May 23 (UPI) -- U.S. medical device firm SenoRx said it has been cleared for U.S. marketing of its multi-lumen radiation balloon for use in brachytherapy.

The Multi-Lumen Radiation Balloon is intended to provide brachytherapy after lumpectomy for breast cancer, the company said, and is designed to meet the needs of doctors as they shift away from the conventional whole-breast radiation to the newer, localized partial breast radiation.

The device uses a vacuum to remove excess fluid and to adhere closely to an often irregularly shaped lumpectomy cavity to deliver precise radiation dosing through multiple seed lumens.

"Certain patients who are presently candidates for balloon therapy are currently excluded because of the location of the lesion relative to their breast size," said Lloyd Malchow, SenoRx president and chief executive officer.
