FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., May 10 (UPI) -- Uveal melanoma, the most common type of cancer to develop within the eyeball in adults, has been linked to colon cancer in a U.S. study.
Dr. Frederick H. Davidorf of Ohio State University in Columbus studied 130 uveal melanoma patients who provided their extended family medical histories.
A small but significant number of uveal melanoma patients and their families are at higher risk for development of other cancers, most significantly colon cancer, according to the presentation at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology annual meeting in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
"Therefore, ophthalmologists need to advise patients about the necessity of screening for colon cancer both for themselves and for their blood relatives," Davidorf said in a statement.
"Identification of specific genetic changes associated with increased risk for uveal melanomas may provide further insight into the molecular pathogenesis of this cancer."
