'Governator,' Clinton fight child obesity

NEW YORK, May 3 (UPI) -- California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger Thursday joined former U.S. President Bill Clinton's alliance to fight childhood obesity.

"Ensuring the health and well-being of our children is my top priority," said Schwarzenegger, who in his former life as a movie star, and currently as California governor, has championed several health and fitness campaigns.

There are currently about 12.5 million obese children in the United States, and another 13 million in danger of becoming obese.

Schwarzenegger and Clinton will be co-leaders of the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a joint initiative of the Clinton Foundation and the American Heart Association.

The alliance is best known for agreements it brokered with soda and snack manufacturers to provide healthier food options in schools. Its other programs promote physical activity for children and healthier overall school environments.

Schwarzenegger was preceded in the position by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee.
