LYON, France, April 30 (UPI) -- French firm EDAP said Monday it has an exclusive deal with China Medical to launch the Chinese firm's ultrasound devices in the European Union and Russia.

China Medical's HIFU tumor therapy systems are used to treat prostate cancer.

The agreement gives EDAP exclusive distribution rights in the European Union and Russia for an initial period of four years following approval of the HIFU systems in Europe and Russia, with optional renewal.

The deal calls for China Medical to secure regulatory approval of the ultrasound devices in the two markets with close support from EDAP.

"Together, our companies represent a dominant force in HIFU applications, and we believe our distribution alliance will accelerate worldwide acceptance of this important technology," said Marc Oczachowski, CEO of EDAP.

"EDAP's Ablatherm-HIFU system has set a new standard in prostate cancer care."
