$4M grant aimed at minority dentists

WASHINGTON, April 30 (UPI) -- The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Monday announced a $4 million grant to improve access to dental care in underserved U.S. areas.

The new grant will go to support an ongoing program that recruits dental students and medical residents to provide dental care to low-income patients in 237 community-based clinics.

The students' educational institutions also contribute by providing continuing education for safety-net dentists to keep them abreast of medical advances.

Participating schools like Howard University and Boston University have also seen sharp increases in underrepresented minority enrollment, the foundation said.

The program was founded with a $19 million Robert Wood Johnson Foundation grant in 2001.
