ROCKVILLE, Md., March 20 (UPI) -- U.S. generic drug firm Barr said Tuesday its subsidiary Barr Laboratories has officially challenged Otsuka's patent on the brand drug Abilify.
Barr hopes to market a generic verion of Abilify -- an anti-psychotic drug that treats bipolar disorder -- in 2 mg, 5 mg, 10 mg, 15 mg, 20 mg and 30 mg tablets.
Barr said it believes it is one of several generic drug makers vying to copy Otsuka's drug, which garnered annual U.S. sales of roughly $1.9 billion for the period ending in January, based on data from IMS Health.
Otsuka filed suit this week in the U.S. District Court of New Jersey in an atrempt to block Barr from marekting generic Abilify, the company said.
