CLEVELAND, March 12 (UPI) -- Mounting evidence suggests using pacifiers may help prevent sudden infant death syndrome, according to Cleveland researchers.
The American Academy of Pediatrics Task Force on SIDS encouraged pacifier use for children less than 1 year old, according to an article in Nursing for Women's Health.
Several studies have indicated that pacifier use lowers the risk of SIDS, but parents should be counseled on how to use pacifiers safely, according to Elizabeth G. Damato of Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.
"Pacifiers shouldn't be used before the age of one month in breastfed infants to avoid the disruption of regular feeding habits," Damato said in a statement. "Also, infants should not be forced to take a pacifier and parents should not reinsert it once the infant falls asleep."
Parents should avoid homemade pacifiers and strings or cords to hang the pacifier around the neck of a child, the task force warned. Parents should also regularly clean and replace pacifiers, added Damato.
