Zimbabwe doctor strike continues

HARARE, Zimbabwe, Jan. 25 (UPI) -- A strike by doctors and nurses continues to cripple the healthcare system in Zimbabwe.

Wards in hospitals have been closed, or are being staffed by student nurses or foreign doctors in the southern African country, Voice of America reported Thursday.

At issue is a substantial raise for both nurses and doctors, who have already recently seen their pay increase several-fold. Nurses who currently earn $35 per month want a raise to $715 per month, while doctors want to see their monthly salary raised to about $1,200.

The Zimbabwean health minister has accused the striking workers of having a political agenda and has warned that those who do not soon return to work will lose their jobs.
