LASIK surgery safer, post surgery possible

LAS VEGAS, Jan. 8 (UPI) -- Rapidly improving technology is making LASIK safer, as well as widening the scope of its potential benefits, says a U.S. researcher.

"We are seeing that we are able to help many more people who have had a poor outcome from a previous common LASIK procedure to correct myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism," said Dr. A. John Kanellopoulous.

"In fact, the rate of success for vision improvement in those patients is better than 90 percent."

Laser systems have become much more sophisticated in treating details and diagnostic abilities have also significantly improved, so we have a much better understanding why a person is having vision issues, says Kanellopoulous.

Kanellopoulous says the most important diagnostic tools are:

-- Wavefront analyzers, which provide information on how the eye works as an optical system and significantly helps improve night vision.

-- Topographic analyzers, which give detailed views of the cornea, the clear tissue at the front of the eye that covers the iris and pupil and focuses light rays entering the eye.
