WHITEHOUSE STATION, N.J., Dec. 29 (UPI) -- U.S. drug giant Merck said Friday it has acquired Sirna Therapeutics, Inc. in a cash transaction.
Merck said the deal closed in the fourth quarter of 2006. The deal is reportedly valued at $1.1 billion.
Sirna Therapeutics, based in San Franciso, is a biotechnology company that focuses on RNAi-based therapies for diseases such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD), hepatitis C, dermatology, asthma, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and Huntington's disease.
Sirna said it is ready to begin a phase 2 study of an AMD treatment with its partner, Allergan, and is also preparing to launch a study of a potential treatment for hepatitis C virus.
The company said it also has established an exclusive multi-year strategic alliance with GlaxoSmithKline for the development of siRNA compounds for the treatment of respiratory diseases.
