Survey: Workers with disabilities happy

WASHINGTON, Dec. 4 (UPI) -- Most U.S. employees with severe disabilities working under the Javits-Wagner-O'Day program are very happy with their jobs, a survey found.

Seventy-six percent of employees were very happy with their jobs, and 79 percent said they were proud of their work, according to the survey of more than 500 randomly selected employees with cognitive, physical or other disabling conditions under the Javits-Wagner-O'Day program.

Ninety-nine percent of surveyed employees characterized their jobs as excellent or good, and the same percentage said they felt safe at work.

Additional survey findings included:

-- 92 percent characterized their pay as excellent or good;

-- 81 percent have two or more friends at work;

-- 94 percent feel they are given the appropriate resources to complete their jobs;

-- 79 percent are comfortable going to their supervisor with questions or problems; and

-- 77 percent said they received adequate training to complete their job.

The Javits-Wagner-O'Day program provides employment opportunities to nearly 47,000 people and is the largest single source of employment in the United States for people who are blind or have other severe disabilities.
