"This was an extremely competitive grant and we are fortunate that our proposal for a Center for Lupus Research was selected," said Virginia Pascual, a physician who will head the new center. "The goals of the Center for Lupus Research include the characterization of several cell types isolated from the blood of lupus patients."

Lupus is an autoimmune disorder that affects about 1.5 million people in the United States, approximately 90 percent of whom are women.
