Novartis' Zaditor approved for OTC sales

FLORHAM PARK, N.J., Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Novartis said Friday the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the itchy-eyes treatment Zaditor for over-the-counter sales.

"Now for the first time, people who suffer from itchy eyes caused by allergens such as pollen or pet dander can get fast, long-acting relief over-the-counter with Zaditor," said Marion Morton, head of Novartis' ophthalmics business unit.

"Because Zaditor is now available at full prescription strength without a prescription, consumers can save time and money without sacrificing long-lasting symptom relief," Morton added.

Novartis said Zaditor's advantages over current OTC products include that it lasts up to 12 hours. Most other products only provide three to four hours of relief.

Zaditor, which will carry a retail price of $14.99 for a 30-day supply, will be available OTC in drug stores nationwide beginning in January.
