Report: Fatigue need not be way of life

BOSTON, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- Fatigue has become a way of life for so many U.S. adults that it almost feels normal, according to a report from Harvard Medical School.

Although the underlying cause of persistent fatigue can be hard to identify, that doesn't mean the fatigue is imaginary, because fatigue often signals that something is wrong, physically or emotionally.

However, people -- even those being treated for fatigue-producing illnesses -- can take steps to boost their energy by:

-- Practicing relaxation therapies like meditation, self-hypnosis, yoga and tai chi.

-- Prioritizing "must-do" activities and paring down less important tasks.

-- Exercising, which helps people sleep more soundly and releases hormones that can make people feel energized.

-- Eating small meals or snacks every few hours.

-- Quitting smoking because it speeds up the heart rate, raises blood pressure and stimulates brain-wave activity associated with wakefulness.

-- Gardening, hiking or walking can help restore body and soul.

The 40-page report, "Boosting Your Energy," by Harvard Health Publications, offers information about fatigue and ways to boost energy.
