Science group applauds NCI pick

PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 18 (UPI) -- The nation's largest cancer research group Friday applauded the choice of John Niederuber as new head of the National Cancer Institute.

Niederhuber's experience as a surgical oncologist, cancer researcher and in leadership roles at national cancer organizations has prepared him well for his new role, the American Association for Cancer Research said in a statement Friday.

The challenge that lies ahead for the new director will be to maintain current momentum in cancer research while faced with the constraint of a tightened budget, the group said.

"As Dr. Niederhuber stewards the (National Cancer Institute's) future investments in cancer research," said association president Geoffrey Wahl,

"the (association) will look to him for strong and creative leadership of the National Cancer Program to maintain the pace of current research ... consistent funding to guarantee a place in cancer research for the bright young minds that will produce tomorrow's discoveries,"
