U.K. doctors lack jobs due to glitch

LONDON, June 14 (UPI) -- The British Medical Association warns that nearly half of junior doctors, about 11,000 individuals, face unemployment.

The National Health Service is moving from a "three stage" training program to a "two stage" program, and in August 2007 some 21,000 two-stage and three-stage program participants will be applying for the same 9,500 specialist training positions, the Daily Mail reported.

Remaining doctors, whose training has already cost British taxpayers about $460,000, will either leave the health service to continue their training abroad or be forced to take non-training positions that offer little level for advancement.

The association said it is continuing talks with the government to find more suitable alternatives for the junior doctors.
