Skin, eyes and lips should be protected

NEW YORK, May 26 (UPI) -- A U.S. dermatologist advises not only to protect skin from ultraviolet radiation from the sun, but the lips and eyes as well.

Environmental dermatologist Dr. Robert D. Bibb says avoiding sun exposure is by far the best way to reduce the risk of developing skin cancer, but it is not practical in the real world.

He advises:

-- Before applying any sunscreen everyone should apply an antioxidant cream to help prevent skin damage. While raspberry-based creams offer the very best benefits, vitamin C and vitamin E creams will also work.

-- Always apply a sunscreen with a minimum SPF rating of 30, which blocks the most damaging sun rays. Be sure to use enough and reapply it every two hours and after swimming or sweating.

-- Since the lips are more sensitive to sun and wind and are not normally protected by sunscreen application, a lip balm with a minimum SPF rating of 30 is imperative.

-- Always protect the eyes by wearing sunglasses that absorb at least 99 percent of the UV rays. Wrap-around sunglasses are the best, because they help protect your eyes and the skin around your eyes.
