DexCom's glucose-alert 'cell phone' OK'd

SAN DIEGO, March 27 (UPI) -- DexCom said Monday it has been OK'd to market its "cell phone" STS continuous glucose monitoring system.

The device includes a wire-like sensor inserted under the skin, which then continuously monitors and transmits glucose levels to a cell phone-like STS receiver.

The handheld receiver provides the user with real-time data on glucose levels, as well as alerts of dangerously high or low levels.

About 20 million people in the United States have diabetes, DexCom said, quoting statistics from the Centers for Disease Control.

A study of the STS glucose monitoring system was published in the January issue of Diabetes Care, DexCom said.
