Fibroid cost differs with treatment

Published: May 8, 2007 at 11:38 AM
SAN DIEGO, May 7 (UPI) -- Uterine fibroid procedures cost society more than $10,000 per patient each year, even when a woman doesn't have surgery, U.S. health economists say.

Just the direct and indirect costs associated with absenteeism and medical care can equal about $12,000 for the person who doesn't choose an invasive procedure, said David Lee, senior director for health economics and outcomes research at GE Healthcare in Waukesha, Wis.

"Most often, however, a woman undergoes hysterectomy for symptomatic fibroids, those non-malignant uterine tumors that cause pain, bleeding and discomfort for thousands of women," Lee told United Press International Monday at the 55th annual clinical meeting of the American college of Obstetricians and Gynecologists in San Diego.

Using data obtained from the MarketScan Commercial Claims and Encounters, Lee determined that treatment of fibroids, including doctor, hospital, and indirect costs were:

-- $17,373 for surgical hysterectomy.

-- $14,727 for surgical myomectomy in which only the fibroids is removed.

-- $12,598 for uterine remobilization.

-- $6.825 for endometrial ablation.

He suggested another $12,000 to $14,000 a year could be added to the total for absenteeism and medical care before or after any of the treatments, or for no treatment at all.
