FDA warns about T.W. Enterprises' chews

WASHINGTON, April 6 (UPI) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned late Thursday T.W. Enterprises' dog chews may be contaminated with Salmonella.

The alert applies to all sizes and lots of American Bullie A.B. Bull Pizzle Puppy Chews and Dog Chews. The FDA said consumers should not feed the chews to their pets and should instead dispose of them.

The FDA first detected the presence of Salmonella, which can cause serious infections in dogs, cats and people, while conducting tests on samples of three different sizes of T.W. Enterprises' pizzle chews.

Although Salmonella was only detected in one of the samples, the FDA said all sizes and lots should be considered suspect because the manufacturing process for the chews facilitates cross-contamination to other sizes of the product. In addition, packages of the chews are not coded with batch or lot numbers or date of manufacture, so it is impossible to distinguish which batches or lots may be potentially contaminated.

The FDA said it is continuing to investigate the matter to determine the source of the contamination.
