FDA OKs Varian's cancer device

HAAN, Germany, March 21 (UPI) -- Varian said Wednesday the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved its brachytherapy set for cancer of the esophagus.

The Esophagus Bougie Set, which is designed specifically for intraluminal treatment of cancer of the esophagus, will improve the delivery of brachytherapy treatments, Varian said.

"This updated applicator set, now also available for our VariSource users, enables clinicians to deliver more effective and precise brachytherapy treatments to the esophagus," said Claudia Andres-Zindler, Varian's applicator product manager.

The set, which is equipped with four different sizes of Bougies, is intended to ensure an optimal distance from the source to the tissue being treated.
