Danish court halts generic Lipitor

NEW YORK, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- Pfizer said Friday a Danish court issued an injunction blocking sales of Ranbaxy's generic Lipitor.

The Bailiff's Court of the Copenhagen City Court in Denmark granted a preliminary injunction against the pharmaceutical wholesaler Nomeco A/S that requires Ranbaxy's generic product to be withdrawn from the Danish market pending the outcome of a future patent infringement trial.

"This ruling is another significant milestone in our defense of Lipitor patents around the world," said Allen Waxman, Pfizer's senior vice president and general counsel.

The court case involved three patents Pfizer holds on Lipitor as well as processes and intermediate compounds used to make the active ingredient, atorvastatin. The Bailiff's Court upheld all three of the patents, which provide coverage for Lipitor through November 2011.

The ruling is subject to appeal by Nomeco.
