Method to rid water of hormones advances

CARY, N.C., Feb. 9 (UPI) -- U.S. firm Shine Holdings said Friday it has filed for a patent on a process that addresses the growing problem of hormones in drinking water.

The company said its process uses an ultra high-efficiency ozone process to remove so-called endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), waterborne hormones and other compounds from the water supply.

The inadvertent ingestion of these hormones in drinking water has been blamed for phenomena like early onset of puberty, reproductive diseases in women and a decrease in male fertility.

"In at least seven separate scientific studies since 2002, ozone is cited for its intense effect in hormone removal and EDC elimination," Brett Swailes said in a statement. "The technology forms the foundation for a pioneering line of future products."
