Mylan's thyroid generic approved

CANONSBURG, Pa., Jan. 3 (UPI) -- U.S. firm Mylan has been approved to market levothyroxine sodium tablets, a generic version of Levothroid.

The brand drug is manufactured by Lloyd Pharmaceuticals for Forest Laboratories.

With this latest generic approval, Mylan said it has developed generic equivalents to all four major treatments for hypothyroidism and pituitary TSH suppression: Synthroid, Levoxyl, Unithroid and Levothroid.

The new drug is available in 0.025, 0.050, 0.075, 0.088, 0.100, 0.112, 0.125, 0.137, 0.150, 0.175, 0.200, and 0.300 mg strengths.

Total U.S. sales for all Levothyroxine brands and generic equivalents were approximately $1 billion for the 12-month period ending Sept. 30, according to data from IMS Health, a pharmaceutical market intelligence company.
