Allergan OK'd for anti-wrinkle drug

NEW YORK, June 5 (UPI) -- Botox maker Allergan said Monday it has been approved to market its new anti-wrinkle skin "filler" Juvederm.

The aesthetic drug maker said its latest dermatological treatment is the only dermal filler based on a smooth gel with the highest concentration of hyaluronic acid, making it last longer, with less need for touch-ups.

By contrast, all other hyaluronic acid-based skin fillers use a gel particle suspension formulation, which the company said has effects that are less subtle and "can be visibly seen."

"Juvederm is long lasting, up to 6 months or longer. And because of its smooth gel formulation, patient discomfort may be minimized during the injection procedure," said Allergan Senior Scientist Ahmet Tezel.

The company said the most common side effects of the new filler were mild to moderate, lasted seven days or less and included temporary injection site reactions such as redness, pain/tenderness, firmness, swelling, lumps and bumps and bruising.
