HHS chief makes 11th-hour Part D pitch

NEW BRITAIN, Conn., May 12 (UPI) -- HHS chief Mike Leavitt launched an eleventh-hour publicity junket Friday to spur last-minute signups to Medicare's Part D.

The deadline for seniors to enroll in the government prescription-drug benefit is May 15 at midnight.

Leavitt will visit senior centers in a number of East Coast cities to raise awareness of Part D and make a final pitch for enrollment. He is scheduled to address seniors in New Britain, Conn., Bridgeport, Conn., Philadelphia and New York.

Earlier in the week the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services issued its latest tally for seniors' enrollment, saying 37 million seniors are now signed up for the plan, including the Medicare benefit and plans offered by other government agencies like the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The agency announced earlier this month it would spend $500,000 to recruit rural-based seniors in Part D.
