Reliant Fraxel laser OK'd for acne scars

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., March 27 (UPI) -- Reliant Technologies said it has been OK'd for a new use of its Fraxel Laser to treat acne and surgical scars.

The laser system treats acne-related scars -- including the deep indentation or "ice-pick" scarring, as well as surgical scars, by removing the damaged surface tissue and by stimulating collagen remodeling, the company said.

"Only the proprietary Fraxel laser with its unique science of fractional resurfacing provides a comprehensive treatment approach that gently repairs the epidermal abnormalities and also reaches deep into the dermis to induce new collagen formation without compromising patient safety," said Zakia Rahman, clinical instructor of dermatology at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif., who led the study.

Reliant said it tested the laser system in 40 patients, 93 percent of whom showed statistically significant improvement in overall scar severity at three-month follow-up.
