Flemish nationalists claim Jewish support

ANTWERP, Belgium, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- The leader of Belgium's Flemish nationalist party has called on Jewish voters to join its battle against radical Islam.

Filip Dewinter, leader of Vlaams Belang -- or Flemish Interest -- said his group and the large Jewish community in Antwerp are allies, The Independent reported.

"In the Jewish community we have about 30 to 35 per cent of the vote," he said. "That's official because we know our score over there in the Jewish neighborhood."

Vlaams Belang advocates limits on immigration and independence for Flanders, the Flemish-speaking part of Belgium. Other parties have kept the group from holding political power by a coalition known as the cordon sanitaire.

Vlaams Belang is expected to do well in this Sunday's local elections. The group is expected to emerge as the strongest political force in Antwerp, a port with a large immigrant population where racial violence has become common.

Dewinter denies that his party has incited racial violence, accusing other political groups of "demonization."
