USA Network orders 'Suits' spinoff to series

March 9 (UPI) -- USA Network said it has ordered to series an as-yet-untitled spinoff of Suits, starring Gina Torres as powerhouse lawyer Jessica Pearson.

Jessica left New York for Chicago in last year's mid-season finale of Suits, but she has continued to appear on the show in a recurring capacity. She is expected to reveal more about her new life in the Season 7 finale, airing April 25.

"Gina's portrayal of Jessica Pearson as one of television's strongest, most successful businesswomen has made a huge impact with fans," Chris McCumber, president of entertainment networks for NBCUniversal Cable Entertainment, said in a statement Thursday. "We can't wait to explore this next chapter in the Suits legacy -- and a brand new world for Jessica."

"It was an extraordinary pleasure working with Gina on Suits for six years. Beyond her undeniable talent, she is an incredible partner and collaborator, and I always hoped we would work together again," added Korsh, creator and executive producer of Suits and the new spinoff series. "I am sincerely grateful to USA and UCP for giving Dan Arkin, my producing partners at Hypnotic and me the opportunity to continue Jessica Pearson's journey in this new series that will encapsulate all that our fans love about her and Suits -- but with its own distinct story that will be unique to the franchise."

The cable network recently renewed Suits for Season 8 and announced the addition of Katherine Heigl to the ensemble, which also includes Gabriel Macht, Sarah Rafferty, Rick Hoffman and new series regular Dulé Hill. Meghan Markle and Patrick J. Adams are departing the show at the end of this season.
