Nov. 1 (UPI) -- Gunpowder, a three-part thriller about the historical events that culminated with the creation of Guy Fawkes Day, is scheduled to debut on HBO this December.

Starring Kit Harington and Liv Tyler, the 17th century-set miniseries will air Dec. 18-20 in the United States. Also featuring Peter Mullan and Mark Gatiss, the program was broadcast last month on the BBC in Britain.

"We are delighted to offer a platform for a project that is so close to Kit Harington's heart," Kary Antholis, president of HBO miniseries and CINEMAX programming, said in a statement. "Kit's passion for and belief in Gunpowder are evident in every frame of the miniseries."

"Three years ago, Daniel West and I conceived and began developing Gunpowder with Kudos and Ronan Bennett," added Harington, who is also a producer on the project. "We are now thrilled to share this unique story with the U.S. audience. I can't think of a better place to do that than my home at HBO."

Harington is best known for his work on HBO's Game of Thrones, while Tyler recently starred in the cable network's series The Leftovers.
