May 25 (UPI) -- Netflix has canceled their hip-hop music drama The Get Down after one season. The series from filmmaker Baz Luhrmann, was one of the most expensive shows for the streaming service to produce with Season 1 costing about $120 million, Deadline reported.

The Get Down premiered in August with Part 1 of Season 1 before returning in April for Part II.
The series which explored the early days of hip-hop and was set in the South Bronx in the late 1970s, starred Justice Smith, Jimmy Smits, Shameik Moore, Herizen F. Guardiola, Skylan Brooks, Jaden Smith, T.J. Brown Jr. and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II.
Luhrmann addressed the cancellation on Facebook Wednesday noting that his inability to commit more time to a second season was a key reason that led to the cancelation.
"When I was asked to come to the center of The Get Down to help realize it, I had to defer a film-directing commitment for at least two years," he wrote.
"This exclusivity has understandably become a sticking point for Netflix and Sony, who have been tremendous partners and supporters of the show. It kills me that I can't split myself into two and make myself available to both productions," he continued. "But the simple truth is, I make movies. And the thing with movies is, that when you direct them, there can be nothing else in your life."
