May 24 (UPI) -- Jon Stewart and HBO have scrapped plans to produce short form animated content that would have focused on politics. The venture, first announced in November 2015 when Stewart signed a four-year deal with the network, was originally scheduled to debut ahead of the presidential election, noted The Hollywood Reporter.

"HBO and Jon Stewart have decided not to proceed with a shortform digital animated project," Stewart and HBO said in a joint statement. "We all thought the project had great potential but there were technical issues in terms of production and distribution that proved too difficult given the quick turnaround and topical nature of the material. We're excited to report that we have some future projects together which you will be hearing about in the near future."
The animated shorts would have featured commentary on topical events with help from Los Angeles-based cloud-graphics company OTOY in order to produce the digital content in a timely manner.
"Appearing on television 22 minutes a night clearly broke me. I'm pretty sure I can produce a few minutes of content every now and again," Stewart had said at the time.
Stewart's deal with HBO was signed after the 54-year-old departed The Daily Show after a 16-year-run. The deal gives Stewart first-look options with HBO for other film and television ventures.
